Belfry rolls past Southwestern 47-26
The Belfry Pirates went on the road to defeat the Southwestern Warriors during the September 13 match in Somerset.
The scoring started early with JD Woolum scoring on one of his three first-half running touchdowns to start the game with the Pirates on top 7-0.
The Warriors failed to answer and see Belfry score again soon after when Chase Varney connected with Cayden Varney for a touchdown pass bringing the total over Southwestern to 12-0.
Then it was Woolum’s turn again, rushing for another first-half touchdown for a score of 19-0 in the Pirates favor.
By the end of the game, Southwestern had tallied 26 points, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Belfry Pirates finished by a comfortable margain, 47-26.
The loss left the Southwestern Warriors with a season record of 0-3, while Belfry now has a record standing of 2-2 and faces Pikeville for their next game.
Pikeville drops season opener 22-7
The Pikeville Panthers fell to the Corbin Cougars 22-7 DATE but showed a bright spot amid the low-scoring affair.
Sophomore Cole Slone caught a 48-yard touchdown pass from senior Isaac Duty on a go route straight down the field to put the Panthers first touchdown in the books for the 2024 season.
Along with the successful extra point, the touchdown was the only score the Panthers put on the board. But Pikeville will be looking ahead this early in the season to games five home games coming up against Johnson Central, Belfry, Ironton, and the last two home stands against the Hazard Bulldogs, both in October.
