U.S. 52 closed after train derailment

A train derailment near Hanover, W.Va., has closed U.S. 52 for up to 24 hours, while crews work to clean up the spill. (photo courtesy Craig Blankenship)HANOVER, W.Va. — A train derailment on the Mingo-Wyoming county line has closed a highway for up to 24 hours. It happened early Friday morning near Hanover, W.Va. The train was loaded with coal and overturned at Hanover Wrecker Service, with train cars landing on several automobiles. No injuries have been reported. Mingo County Emergency Management says the derailment has closed U.S. 52 at the Justice Bridge for up to 24 hours, as crews work to clean up the spill.

Kentucky faces ‘triple threat’ of RSV, flu and COVID this winter

The flu, COVID and RSV are rapidly spreading in Kentucky, and health experts say that’s a problem for hospitals, schools and the state’s vulnerable residents. So far, more than 20 school districts have temporarily halted classes due to RSV. At Norton Children’s Hospital, pediatrician Dr. Robert Blair said respiratory viruses spread primarily by airborne droplets from coughing and sneezing. He explained that premature babies and young children with congenital heart disease, reactive airway disease or asthma are particular susceptible to RSV. Two face federal meth trafficking charges out of Wise County

Justin Kyle Elliott and Randall Scott HilemanBIG STONE GAP, Va. — Two southwestern Virginia men are facing federal charges related to meth trafficking in the region. Justin Kyle Elliott, 32, and Randall Scott Hileman, 55, were indicted Wednesday by a federal grand jury in Big Stone Gap. Both men are charged with conspiracy to distribute more than 500 grams of meth, distributing meth and posssession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The crimes are alleged to have taken place between March 2021 and September of this year.
