HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Panthers’ defense fuels opening round win

Pikeville’s defense rescued the offense in an ugly win over Caverna, 43-33, in the opening round of the boys’ All “A” Classic state tournament at Corbin Arena on Thursday night.

The Panthers improved to 11-3 and will face Evangel Christian, a winner over Kentucky Country Day, in the quarterfinals at 9:30 pm tonight. 

Charlie Fitzer led the Panthers with 15 points. He was the only player on either team to score in double figures.

Eli Johnson and Carter Hurley added nine each.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Pikeville handles Harlan to reach quarterfinals

Pikeville jumped out to a big lead in the opening quarter and the Lady Panthers went on to defeat Harlan, 61-41, in the opening round of the All “A” Classic state tournament matchup played at Corbin Arena late Wednesday night.

Pikeville, now 14-2, advances to the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon and will face Crittenden County, which edged Lexington Christian.

Trinity Rowe led four players in double-figure scoring with a game-high 21 points. Leighan Jackson and Kristen Whited followed with 11 each while Kyera Thornsbury added 10 points and 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double.
